If you’re the type of person that yearns for the outdoors but needs a mobile phone able to work alongside you, Land Rover may have the answer.

Called the Explore, the smartphone was developed in conjunction with rugged smartphone specialists Bullitt – which has also made phones for heavy machinery manufacturer Caterpillar – and is inspired by the Discovery premium SUV.

The Explore is built to withstand conditions that would kill most other smartphones – extreme temperatures, water up to 1.8 metres deep, salt water, thermal shock, humidity and high levels of vibration.

Featuring a five-inch HD touchscreen and a 4000m Ah battery that is capable of going two days without a charge, the Explore can be worked with wet and gloved hands – and is capable of instant access to maps and weather reports.

It comes with a compass and SOS light too, making it a great accessory for those who like skiing, hiking, cycling and mountain biking, along with all other outdoor pursuits.

The phone is compatible with all Land Rover in-car applications and is available with extra equipment and fittings, such as mounts of bike handlebars.

The battery life can be doubled if customers choose to fit the Adventure pack, which also improves the robustness and accuracy of the GPS signal.

Priced from £599, the Explore will be officially revealed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 26.

Joe Sinclair, director of branded goods and licensing at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “This is the smartphone we’d all like to own – a perfect combination of design and functionality that embodies the Land Rover DNA and enables customers to be outdoors for longer, with the confidence to go further.”
