Long drives keep relationships alive, says research

The key to a long and happy relationship is going for a long drive, according to research from a car buying service.

Nearly 3,000 motorists who regularly travel in a car with someone else were quizzed by We Buy Any Car. They were asked what they did to pass the time while travelling with company.

Over 62 per cent across both genders said the drive was an opportunity to ‘discuss their relationship’.

92 per cent of the respondents said they discuss big plans like holidays, house plans or car purchases during drives with someone else. Even more respondents (95 per cent) said they gossip about family members, other friends and acquaintances during their drives with regular company.

However, 59 per cent of the survey’s respondents admitted that arguments sometimes happen on long car journeys with their regular travel partner.

Also, as many as 82 per cent of female respondents in the survey said they chose to sing on a long drive, compared to just 67 per cent of the men partaking.

The Head of Technical Services at We Buy Any Car, Rich Evans, said: “The lack of uninterrupted quality time means couples rarely have the time to discuss their plans or air the issues which are important to them.

“The results of our survey show a long car journey could offer one of the few opportunities for couples to have a meaningful and uninterrupted conversation about the things which are important to them both.”
