Mazda MX-5 hardtop expected to appear in New York

A hardtop model of the latest MX-5 is believed to be on its way to New York.

A hardtop version of the latest Mazda MX-5, with a metal-folding roof, will reportedly feature at the 2016 New York motor show later this month.

Various online reports reveal that on Mazda’s invites to this year’s New York Motor Show, the Japanese carmaker hints that it will reveal a new model at the event. Although no details on the new car are given away on this invite, the same reports predict Mazda will reveal a hardtop version of the MX-5.

Name, engines and pricing

The current-generation MX-5 was launched last year and up until now has only been available with a soft, fabric convertible roof. Because the previous MX-5 came in both soft and hardtop forms, a new version of the latest MX-5 with a metal roof feels pretty much inevitable.

It’s likely that the new hardtop model will be called the MX-5 Roadster Coupe and it will likely use the same engines as the original, fabric-roofed version. That would mean the 136bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine and 158bhp 2.0-litre petrol unit will both be retained.

Pricing for the new MX-5 Roadster Coupe is likely to start a little more compared to the soft-top. Currently, the MX-5 convertible starts at £18,495 so the Roadster Coupe could start at about £20,000.

The press preview at the New York motor show begins on Wednesday, March 23rd.
