Mazda MX-5 RF wins major design award

The Mazda MX-5 RF, the metal roof version of Mazda's latest sports car, has won a prestigious design award. Read on to learn more about this achievement.

The Mazda MX-5 RF has won the top accolade at the prestigious Red Dot product design awards for 2017.

The Red Dot design awards are open to a wide range of products and are overseen by a jury of designers, professors and journalists. The Red Dot’s highest honour, the Best of the Best award, is handed out to the products that are considered to have achieved “a perfect harmony of quality, desirability and usability.”

Out of the 5,500 entries received for the Best of the Best award this year, just 102 products were given this honour, the Mazda MX-5 RF being amongst them.

The recently-launched Mazda MX-5 RF changes the manual folding fabric roof used for the ‘standard’ version of the current MX-5. Instead, the RF (short for Retractable Fastback) has a hands-free electric folding metal roof mechanism and fixed rear window. The roof can be opened or close in 13 seconds.

This is the sixth honour which Mazda has received from the Red Dot design awards over the years. The Mazda CX-3 and Mazda 2 won awards in 2015 alongside the MX-5 convertible, while the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 received honours in 2014 and 2013 respectively.

The Mazda MX-5 RF starts pricing from £22,295, which is £3,500 more than the starting price of the soft-top MX-5 convertible.
