Mazda’s first EV tipped for Tokyo Motor Show unveil

The new EV is expected to debut next month, and will go on sale next year,

Mazda’s first electric car could make its debut next month at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Japanese manufacturer, which prides itself on its efficient internal combustion engines, currently has no electrified models in its range, with the exception of mild-hybrid variants of the Mazda3 and CX-30.

But that could change next month as the brand’s first electric car is expected to be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show, according to Automotive News.

Mazda has already shown off the powertrain of this EV, which has been disguised underneath the bodywork of a CX-30. The prototype, known as he ‘e-TPY’, is set to be a “brand new model” according to the news website, though it’s not certain what type of car this EV will be.

While Mazda has previously announced that it is working with other brands such as Toyota, Subaru and Suzuki on developing further electric models, the car that’s expected to be unveiled next month will not be part of that partnership. Instead, it will be a bespoke model that’s set to be offered as a complete EV and as a range-extender for American markets. This new EV is expected to arrive in showrooms in 2020.

According to Automotive News, the range-extender model could see Mazda’s renowned rotary engine re-introduced after more than a decade of absence.

While Mazda has been behind many manufacturers when it comes to electrified models, this new EV will kickstart a whole host of hybrid and electric models from the Japanese manufacturer.

The Tokyo Motor Show runs between October 24 and November 4.
