Mazda has revealed two intriguing design concepts based on its latest MX-5 sports car. One is called the MX-5 Spyder and the other is named the MX-5 Speedster.
Both concepts, revealed today at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, are an attempt to turn the MX-5 into an even more lightweight and more driver-focused vehicle. Both of the cars also feature retro styling touches inspired by classic convertible cars.
To achieve these goals, both of the Mazda concepts feature a comprehensive amount of aftermarket parts which came from various suppliers.
The MX-5 Spyder, decked out in a Mercury Silver paint job, features a carbon fibre aero kit, 17-inch alloy racing wheels and a bespoke, natural full-grain leather interior.
Meanwhile, the MX-5 Speedster appears even more like an old school race car since it has no sort of roof featured at all. The Speedster puts greater emphasis on saving weight than the Spyder does.
Other design highlights of the Speedster include the all-new carbon fibre doors and the custom 16-inch alloy wheels. While a standard new Mazda MX-5 has a relatively low kerb weight of 1,057kg, the Speedster version weighs in at just 973kg.
A Mazda design manager, Ken Saward, commented: “Both MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster are uncompromising designs that highlight the core strengths of MX-5.”
A regular Mazda MX-5 can be bought new in the UK right now for a starting price of £18,495.
