Mazda to release updated MX-5 in September

The revised roadster comes with more powerful engines, upgraded safety technology and a new trim level.

Mazda has revealed the updates it is making to the 2019 version of the MX-5 roadster, including engine upgrades and increased levels of safety equipment.

With the first set of refreshed models going on sale from September 1, Mazda has improved the power on the 1.5-litre engine from 129bhp to 130bhp and boosted the performance of the 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G from 157bhp to 181bhp.

The 2.0-litre engine will come with start/stop technology for the first time and at launch will only be available on the top GT Sport Nav+ spec. Mazda will fit the engine to SE-L Nav+ and Sport Nav+ models later in the autumn.

Sport Nav+ models now come with more safety equipment as standard, including front smart city brake support, lane departure warning system, rear smart city brake support, traffic sign recognition and driver attention alert – while GT Sport Nav+ also comes with blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, adaptive LED headlights and a reversing camera.

New 16- and 17-inch alloy wheel designs have also added.

Jeremy Thompson, Mazda UK managing director, said: “When it comes to driver engagement, the current generation MX-5 has already established itself as a benchmark sports car, so with extra power, improved performance, more revs to enjoy and a sweeter exhaust note, the 2019 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G MX-5 will be more exciting and satisfying to drive than ever before.

“With telescopic steering adjustment now standard across all models, we’ve listening to feedback from our customers to make sure driver comfort is also enhanced.”

Prices for the new model start from £18,995.
