Mazda tuner BBR’s turbo mod will take your MX-5 all the way to 155mph

BBR has unveiled its Stage 1 turbo mod for the ND Mazda MX-5 Miata, which boosts maximum power up to 248bhp. Find out more, including pricing information, here.

The Mazda MX-5 is widely regarded as probably the most fun you can have with your pants on, in automotive terms at least, but MX-5 tuning boffins BBR reckon they can do you one better.

BBR’s Stage 1 turbo kit, its latest modification package for the MX-5, is designed for the 2.0-litre version of the car and adds pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: a whopping big turbocharger.

Along with the twin-scroll turbo, you also get a new exhaust manifold and downpipe, plus a new intercooler, reinforced plumbing and larger induction hoses, plus a tweak to the ECU.

All in all, it can boost the 158bhp MX-5 all the way up to a mega 248bhp, which means it can zip from 0-62mph in just over five seconds before heading all the way on to 155mph.

Fully reversible, available with 36-month warranty

That makes it 2.3 seconds quicker than the stock 2.0-litre car and 22mph faster, but just because there’s a big turbo in the way doesn’t mean it loses out on revvy character: peak power kicks in from 7,150rpm.

Sounds good, right? There’s more good news too, given that the entire kit costs just £4,995 if you want it installed by an expert, or £4,395 if you fancy turning the wrench yourself.

Even better, BBR says that the conversion is fully reversible, doesn’t effect emissions or the car’s ability to pass an MOT, and is available with a choice of either 12-month or 36-month warranties. Now, where did we leave our wallets…?
