McLaren 765LT Spider hits the road as firm’s most powerful drop-top

High-performance drop-top packs a turbocharged V8 engine

McLaren’s new 765LT Spider has arrived as the Woking-based firm’s most powerful convertible supercar ever.

The 765LT Spider’s party piece is, of course, its roof. It’s an electrically operated, one-piece carbon fibre folding hardtop that can be lowered or raised in 11 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph.

Drivers are also able to allow more of the V8’s engine - bringing 754bhp and 800Nm of torque - into the cabin via a powered rear window that can be lowered or raised. McLaren claims that the Spider will go from 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds or from 0-124 seconds in 7.2 seconds. Given space, it’ll manage 205mph flat-out.

Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer, McLaren Automotive, said: “As we continue to build the LT sub-brand with the introduction of the new 765LT Spider, it’s clear that our customers are increasingly attracted to the Longtail supercar proposition of exhilarating, extreme performance and limited availability.

“With all 765 examples of the 765LT coupe sold, it’s no surprise that as we publicly announce our new LT Spider, production capacity for 2021 is already filled.”

McLaren has employed a variety of weight-saving measures across the 765LT Spider, too. A lightweight titanium exhaust has been fitted while carbon-fibre has been used across the board and, thanks to these and other features, the 765LT Spider weighs in at 80kg less than the 720S Spider and only 49kg more than the 765LT Coupe.

Owners who fancy making their Spider even lighter can also opt for super-lightweight carbon fibre race seats which weigh in at just 3.35kg apiece, while McLaren takes the crash diet even further by taking out the car’s air conditioning and audio system - though both of these can be put back in at no extra cost should the driver prefer.

The Spider is kept as stiff as possible thanks to its MonoCage II-S structure underneath. Because of the stiffness and rigidity it brings, no additional bracing has been added to the car in its change to a convertible which, again, helps to keep weight as low as possible.

The 765LT Spider is priced from £310,500, though drivers are able to add to this via a wide range of accessories as part of McLaren’s Special Operations (MSO).
