McLaren celebrates 10,000th car milestone in just five years

Supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive has officially built its 10,000th car just five years after unveiling its first-ever production car.

Demand for McLaren’s vehicles has been so high that it’s had to add a second shift of staff at its factory in Woking earlier this year, recruiting an extra 250 workers to build 20 cars per day.

McLaren attributes the growth to the introduction of its Sports Series range, slightly more affordable cars which start from around £140,000, compared to the £1 million or so that the flagship P1 costs.

In particular, the 570S has proven to be incredibly popular with buyers, and it’s a 570S which is the 10,000th model to roll off McLaren’s production line.

Mike Flewitt, McLaren’s CEO, said: “Much of the development is thanks to the introduction of the Sports Series family and it’s therefore fitting that the 10,000th car is a McLaren 570S.”

McLaren’s sales are only expected to accelerate further next year, with the manufacturer set to unveil an ambitious new business plan at the Geneva Motor Show next March.

The company will invest more than £1 billion over the next six years, money which will be put towards developing no fewer than 15 new models with the aim of tripling sales.

McLaren’s formidable engineering know-how stems from its background in Formula One, while the company has also branched out into developing advanced electronics and technologies.

Formerly, McLaren built road cars like the iconic F1 under the name McLaren Cars, but McLaren Automotive is an entirely separate entity which was officially launched in 2010.
