McLaren has announced it is working on a new three-seater hypercar, which no doubt will take heavy inspiration from the famous McLaren F1 road car.
Billed as a ‘Hyper-GT’ by McLaren, the new car is currently being developed under the codename BP23 and will be considered a class above even the McLaren P1 which boasted 987bhp.
While McLaren’s new Hyper-GT car will not only without a doubt be incredibly fast, it is also being designed to suit long journeys. Like the P1, the Hyper-GT will utilise a hybrid powertrain.
Our only clue so far in regards the design of the car comes via a sketch image (seen above) which has been released by McLaren Special Operations, the team developing and building the Hyper-GT.
Whether the final product will use the name McLaren F1 remains unclear, but the three-seat layout which has been confirmed for the new Hyper-GT is very reminiscent of the classic F1.
The original McLaren F1 road car was built between 1992 and 1999 and was for a lengthy period of time the fastest production car in the world. It still holds the honour of being the fastest car with a naturally-aspirated engine.
McLaren says just 106 examples of its new Hyper-GT will be made, the same number of units of the McLaren F1 which were ever built. McLaren has already pre-sold all examples of its new Hyper-GT
The first deliveries of the new McLaren hypercar are set to take place in early 2019.
