McLaren reveals Gran Turismo Sport racing game car

The virtual concept does not preview a production car, but could showcase McLarens made after 2030

McLaren has decided to take advantage of the lucrative gaming business with its Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo car that has been created to exclusively feature in the new Gran Turismo Sport game.

Gran Turismo Sport is the latest game from the Gran Turismo racing series, but with more of a motorsport focus than the previous games have had.

McLaren designed the virtual concept in response to a call for unique, visionary GT cars by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, who developed the car alongside the Woking-based manufacturer.

While the concept is strictly virtual and does not preview any future McLarens, the manufacturer has said that it showcases the type of McLarens that could be produced beyond 2030.

The design was also unburdened by production car constraints, although McLaren has maintained that the design remains true to its inherent principles.

Power comes from a hybrid powertrain using a twin-turbo, 4.0-litre McLaren V8 engine using high output electric wheels housed in the front wheel ‘pods’. Gamers will be able to take advantage of its 1,134bhp and 1,275Nm of torque, with a virtual weight of just 1,000kg.

Rob Melville, design director at McLaren Automotive, said: “We wanted to break new ground and to innovate and the McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo does exactly that.

“From the game player’s point of view, the driving experience in this car will be like nothing else. It’s the ultimate expression of the Mclaren design pillars and principles we have already established, future into the 2030s.”

Gran Turismo Sport is available exclusively on the PlayStation 4 from October 17.
