McLaren unveils bespoke 650S with 24-carat gold paint

McLaren has unveiled a special edition version of its 650S supercar designed especially for the Middle East at the Dubai Motor Show.

The 650S Spider Al Sahara 79, partly named after the Arabic word for desert, is designed to look at its best under the unique light and surroundings of the countries in which it will be sold.

Its white gold paint scheme uses genuine flecks of 24-carat gold to achieve a unique, shimmering look, while the atomic number for gold – 79 – inspires the second part of its model name.

Inside, it comes outfitted with black and Almond White upholstery with contrasting stitching, while the gold-infused paint finish extends to the steering wheel, centre console and door panels.

Under the bonnet, performance and power remain untouched over the standard 650S, with a 641bhp output courtesy of a turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine.

Ian Gorsuch, McLaren’s regional director for the Middle East & Africa, said: “McLaren Automotive is a true pioneer in its approach to the design and development of high performance sports and supercars, and the 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 is evidence of that.

"This truly unique project – our first in the Middle East – is inspired by a region that is home to some of our most loyal customers.”

The car was developed by McLaren’s Special Operations division, the arm of the company that’s responsible for designing and engineering bespoke cars for mega-rich customers.

Paul Mackenzie, executive director of the Special Operations wing, said: “The 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 project offered an exciting opportunity to create a truly bespoke car inspired by the rich history and culture of the Middle Eastern region, which is dominated by the beauty of the desert.

“It was fascinating to hear the feedback from McLaren owners, and to then assimilate this into a truly bespoke project that reflected the region’s long history of luxury and craftsmanship.”

Although it won’t be available to buy in Europe, prices for the 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 start from 1,456,308 Emirati Dirham, or around £260,400.
