Mercedes-AMG GT breaks Nürburgring series production saloon record

The twin-turbocharged V8 saloon set a time of 7:25.41 around the Nordschleife, with only the Jaguar XE Project 8 limited-run model going faster.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ four-door coupe has set the fastest lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife for a series production saloon car.

The time of 7:25.41 is the best set by a car with a regular production run, although the fastest saloon ever was the limited-run Jaguar XE Project 8 that set a time of 7:21.2 – with only 300 units of that set to be built.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT four-door

Under the bonnet of the GT 63 S is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine developing 630bhp and 900Nm of torque, which is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. This allows the GT to get from 0-60mph in three seconds flat and reach a top speed of 196mph.

Driven by AMG development engineer and former racing driver Demian Schaffert, the GT 63 S was also fitted with optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres to help find grip around the 12.7-mile long circuit.

The S version of the four-door model also comes with the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which adds an electronic rear differential, ‘Race’ and ‘Drift’ driving modes and larger brake discs on the front paired to yellow brake callipers.

You will still find good levels of equipment, with LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen all fitted as standard.

This range-topping version of the AMG GT four-door starts from £135,550, with people looking to get one early also able to buy the ‘Edition 1’ version, which adds matte grey paint, 21-inch alloys and aerodynamic upgrades. That model is priced from £148,950.

Customers are able to order the AMG GT four-door now, with deliveries beginning in the spring of 2019.
