Mercedes-AMG reveals interior of new SL convertible

New sporty drop-top gets a similar cabin to the S-Class

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the interior of its new SL convertible ahead of a full unveil later in the year.

Set to be Mercedes’ flagship convertible – in the wake of the S-Class Cabriolet being discontinued – it will be the first new generation of the SL in more than a decade. Unlike the current model, the new SL will offer seating for four, though the brand is labelling it a ‘2+2’, with the rear seats only really suitable for children and smaller adults.

But it’s the technology that really impresses, representing a dramatic shift away from the outgoing look of the current SL, gaining a large portrait 11.9-inch touchscreen system mirroring that of the flagship S-Class, though with sportier touches.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also fitted, which Mercedes says is inspired by aviation, while elsewhere elements are taken from the AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupe.

A high-quality interior is also promised with a combination of nappa leather and microfibre being used, while other luxurious features available include 64-colour ambient lighting, a 3D head-up display and a Burmester sound system.

The new SL is also set to have a sportier drive than before, which is emphasised with its performance front seats with integrated headrests and more support.

Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Daimler Group, said: “The SL is an icon of the brand with the three-pointed star: This roadster has stood for automotive fascination and desire for decades. A great opportunity and challenge for design, because every designer wants to create icons.

“The result is a revolutionary interior experience caught between digital and analogue luxury. We created the most iconic SL ever since, the luxury icon of the 20s.”
