Mercedes-Benz has confirmed a convertible version of its latest S-Class luxury car. This new bodystyle for the flagship Mercedes model will be presented to the public later this month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
On sale towards the end of this year, first deliveries of the S-Class Cabriolet will reportedly start in spring 2016.
The new Cabriolet is based on the two-door S-Class Coupe and is very similar in terms of design and profile. The one big difference is the folding fabric roof, which can be opened or closed in 20 seconds while travelling at speeds of up to 37mph.
From launch, the new S-Class Cabriolet will be offered with two petrol engines. The S500 specification uses a 4.7-litre twin-turbocharged V8, returning 33.2mpg and a CO2 output of 199g/km. Topping the range will be the S63 model with a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 boasting 577bhp.
Reports suggest Mercedes will add an even more potent engine late next year, specifically a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 with 621bhp.
Like other current S-Class models, the convertible will come as standard with a fully-digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system. Automatic climate control is also standard, and it relies on numerous sensors to adjust the cabin temperature to a comfortable level whether the roof is up or down.
Pricing for the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is currently unknown, but it’s likely to start from just over £100,000.
