Mercedes GLC SUV targets the X3 and Q5

Mercedes has revealed an all-new SUV model, called the GLC, which will rival the likes of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. It replaces the GLK in Mercedes’ product range and will go on sale this October.

Based on the same platform as the latest C-Class, the Mercedes GLC is available with three exterior styling packs. As well as choosing the standard bodywork, customers can pick a body kit more suited for off-road driving, featuring underbody protection. There’s also an AMG body kit that gives the GLC a more aggressive, sporty look complete with bigger wheels measuring up to 20-inches in diameter.

The interior of the GLC is very similar in design to the C-Class, but it’s more spacious compared to the C-Class saloon. Boot space for the GLC is almost identical to its main rivals, offering 550 litres as standard, or 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Other interior highlights include a tablet-esque screen display on top of the centre console and a Head-up Display in front of the driver on the windscreen. A full-length panoramic roof is an optional feature.

The engine selection for the Mercedes GLC starts with the 168bhp diesel for the 220d specification. It averages 56mpg and emits 129g/km of CO2. Also available from launch is the 250d with a 201bhp diesel and the 250 petrol-run spec with 208bhp.

The range will expand in December with the 350e plug-in hybrid version. This combines a 208bhp petrol engine and 115bhp electric motor, resulting in CO2 emissions of just 60g/km but a 0-62mph sprint time of just 5.9 seconds.

Pricing for the Mercedes GLC starts at £34,950 for the 220d.
