Mercedes reveals world’s first electric-hydrogen hybrid

The Mercedes GLC F-Cell combines a hydrogen fuel cell with an electric powertrain for zero-emission driving

Mercedes has revealed a ground-breaking vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show that combines hydrogen and electric power for the first time.

Called the GLC F-Cell, it is based on the brand’s mid-size SUV, but rather than the diesel engine you would normally find under the bonnet it uses a plug-in hybrid system that combines a hydrogen fuel cell with an electric powertrain. This combination means no harmful emissions are produced by the vehicle.

Producing a combined 197bhp when both powertrains are used together, the F-Cell has a claimed range of 271 miles, with the all-electric mode lasting for 30 miles. The lithium-ion batteries can be charged fully in 90 minutes.

The GLC has been cleverly packaged to make room for the hydrogen fuel tanks, as without the need for a prop shaft there is space to fit one of the containers. The other is stored under the rear seats. Another advantage of the hydrogen fuel cell is that it is very quick to refuel.

It can be driven in four driving modes – Hybrid, F-Cell, Battery and Charge – with all intelligently using the two energy sources either in tandem or on their own for different driving functions. Electrical energy can be recovered from braking or coasting.

The GLC F-Cell is also very close to going into production and will be on the roads in the near-future.

Ola Källenius, member of the board of management at Daimler AG, said: "Our many years of experience with fuel-cell technology pay dividends in the new GLC F-Cell: its long electric range, short refuelling times and everyday practicality of an SUV will make it the perfect vehicle.

“This is made possible by the compact construction of our fuel-cell system. Another genuine world first is the combination with a large additional lithium-ion battery, which can be conveniently charged using plug-in technology."

The model also comes with many of the safety features you would get on a standard GLC model, such as lane keeping assist, active distance assist and Mercedes’ parking package with 360-degree camera.
