Mercedes S65 AMG to top the S-Class cabriolet range

Mercedes has revealed first images and details of the S65 AMG Cabriolet, which will sit at the top of the S-Class convertible line-up.

The new S65 AMG Cabriolet will make its first public appearance at next month’s Detroit Motor Show, before going on sale in Britain in April 2016.

This car is essentially a fabric-roofed version of the two-door, four-seater S65 AMG Coupe. It uses the same turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine as the Coupe version, hooked up to a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Producing 621bhp, the S65 AMG Cabriolet covers the zero to 62mph sprint in 4.1 seconds, according to Mercedes. That’s the same benchmark sprint time as the S65 AMG Coupe, which is especially impressive considering that the Cabriolet weighs 175kg more than the Coupe because of the added support for the car’s platform.

The top speed of the S65 AMG Cabriolet is electronically limited to 155mph, although if customers get the optional AMG Driver’s Pack – the car will be capable of reaching 186mph.

The multi-layer fabric roof of the S65 can be opened and closed at speeds of up to 30mph. There’s also a range of colours for customers to pick for the roof, including black, dark blue, dark red and beige.

Standard equipment for the S65 AMG Cabriolet is plentiful and includes heaters in the backrests of the front seats, heated armrests, Nappa leather interior trim and a heads-up display.

Pricing for the S65 AMG Cabriolet has yet to be confirmed, but the S65 AMG Coupe currently costs £183,075. The Cabriolet version could potentially cost just over £200,000.
