Mercedes takes covers off EQC all-electric SUV

The new model introduces the EQ brand to the world and Mercedes claims the EQC can go more than 280 miles on a single charge.

Mercedes has unveiled its first fully electric model and all-new electric vehicle sub brand with the launch of the EQC.

The German brand first revealed the concept for it back in 2016 and the production version carries many of the design elements featured on that project, such as the large grille, coupe-like roof line and elaborate alloy designs.

Across the front facia is a single light bar connecting the daytime running lights which is fully lit at night to create a unique look, while the back end mirrors that with a thin bar running between the brake lights.

Under the bonnet is an 80kWh lithium-ion battery that powers the two electric motors, with one mounted on each axle to provide all-wheel drive and allows drivers to put the 402bhp and 765Nm of torque down on the road.

Available with five driving modes – Comfort, Eco, Max Range, Sport and Individual – the EQC comes with an accelerator that gives haptic feedback to prompt drivers into preserving charge when in energy-saving modes, while the paddles on the steering wheel alter the energy recuperation levels from the brakes and deceleration.

The Eco Assist system also prompts the driver when to slow down and be more responsible with the charge they have, for example, when coming up to speed limit change and recommending coasting to save energy.

Mercedes claims the EQC can go more than 280 miles on a single charge and it can accommodate fast charging – so when connected to a 110kW charging point, it can go from 10 per cent to 80 per cent charged in just 40 minutes.

Inside, the EQC gets the brand’s MBUX infotainment system, which has special software to help with calculating the most efficient routes, with leather seats and a premium trim completing the look.

Mercedes has also fitted multiple safety systems as part of the Driving Assistance pack, with active distance assist and lane guidance available.

Ola Källenius, Daimler board of management member for research and development, said: “The new EQC is a genuine Mercedes-Benz. This particularly applies to classic attributes such as quality, safety and comfort.““

“These are accompanied by dynamic performance, thanks to two electric motors at the front and rear axles with a combined output of 300 kW, and an intelligent operating strategy for a superior electric range. The EQC is part of a growing family of purely electrically powered vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.”

Full production of the EQC will start next year, with pricing and full specification to be revealed in due course.
