Here’s your first official look at the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup truck

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first official pictures of the Concept X-Class, which is due to come to market as Mercedes’ first ever pickup truck next year.

The upcoming X-Class comes as a result of a co-operation between the German luxury car manufacturer and Renault-Nissan, and the pickup shares many of its parts with the Nissan Navara.

Two versions of the X-Class have been unveiled to reflect the breadth of its ability: one a more lifestyle-oriented pickup and the other a full-bore off-roader with a winch cable and gravel tyres.

Mercedes' first pickup truck

Essentially, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup is intended to be the Mercedes-Benz of pickups, blending Merc’s traditional luxury and elegance with rugged capability.

In terms of its design, its sleek lines and classic Mercedes front grille makes it look almost like an SUV from the front, but the flared wheel arches and widened track tells a different story.

Standing at a lofty 1.9 metres tall, the X-Class also features capable ground clearance and rides on massive wheels as standard, while both concepts also sport chrom trim around the lower edges.

First deliveries expected late 2017

Despite the fact that pickups have traditionally been workhorses, the interior of the X-Class features high-quality materials and leathers, plus round air vents and a central infotainment display.

Engine options have yet to be confirmed, but it’s expected that four-wheel drive will likely come as standard, and Mercedes says it’ll be able to carry loads of more than a tonne and tow up to 3.5 tonnes.

Production of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is due to start next year, with the car built at Nissan’s plant in Barcelona and first deliveries here in the UK expected around the end of 2017.
