Mercedes to recall 75,000 UK cars due to fire risk

Up to 75,000 cars in the UK are being recalled by Mercedes-Benz because a component on them may overheat and cause a fire. This recall affects certain models of the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, E-Class, CLA, GLA and GLC.

The problem with the affected cars relates to the starter part, which is crucial in activating the engine.

If the engine and transmission will not turn over for some reason, a current limiter in the starter motor can overheat from repeated attempts to start the vehicles. This leads to the current limiter overheating and melting nearby parts, potentially creating a fire.

Mercedes says there have been 51 cases of fires across the globe because of this fault, although no injuries have been reported and no incidents including fires have been reported in Britain.

A Mercedes-Benz spokesman for the UK confirmed that owners of the affected cars would be notified during this month and again when replacement parts are available in July.

A fix has been implemented in the production of new cars and models already in dealerships will get the same fix before they are sold.
