MG E-Motion electric sports car due on sale in 2020, priced from £30,000

MG has unveiled an all-new electric sports car concept at the Shanghai Motor Show, which it says will see production by 2020.

Called the E-Motion, the car marks a radical departure for MG, which currently sells only two cars here in the UK: the MG 3 hatchback and the GS crossover.

Designed with a sleek sportsback-style look as a throwback to the much-loved MG roadsters of the past, MG says that the E-Motion will set new standards for the capability of plug-in vehicles.

According to the manufacturer, the E-Motion will be able to hit 0-62mph in under four seconds while still boasting a pure electric range of around 310 miles off a single charge.

That would make it a direct rival for the likes of the Tesla Model S, which currently sets the bar for both speed and range in the production electric vehicle market.

However, unlike the Model S, MG is aiming to have the E-Motion on sale for less than £30,000, making it almost half the price of the entry-level Model S.

MG says the car will also feature an “intelligent infotainment system” and will be fully internet compatible, in order to further broaden its appeal for younger buyers.

Matthew Cheyne, MG UK’s head of sales and marketing, said: “The MG E-motion electric supercar concept demonstrates our global vision for the future.

"Alongside leading the way in design and capability, the next-generation model is the latest step in achieving the ultimate driving experience.”
