MG to present first ever SUV in London

MG has confirmed that it’s all-new SUV, the GS, will make its official debut in Britain at next week’s London Motor Show.

While MG’s first foray into the crossover SUV segment has been seen in the metal before at events including the Shanghai Motor Show back in February, next week marks the car’s first UK public showing.

A budget Qashqai rival

The new GS SUV, reportedly going on sale this June, is expected to rival the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage but is expected to be much cheaper than such competition.

While pricing is currently unconfirmed, reports suggest the GS could start for less than £15,000, which would make it a few grand cheaper than the likes of the Qashqai. Engine options are unconfirmed but could include the 1.5-litre petrol engine from the MG3 supermini and the 1.9-litre turbodiesel currently featured in the MG6 saloon.

All-new platform

The Head of Sales and Marketing for MG, Matthew Cheyne, said: “We’re extremely proud of the GS, so we’re looking forward to unveiling it and speaking to attendees of the event about how easily it will fit into their lifestyle. I can assure potential customers that it will be consistent with the MG-family pricing strategy.”

MG is building the GS on a new scalable platform which could potentially be used in the future to underpin other new models. Previous reports suggest that MG will use this platform to create a smaller SUV model that will rival the likes of the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur in 2017.
