Millennials cause over half of all bad driving offences

According to recent data, drivers aged 34 and under are responsible for over half of all dangerous and careless driving offences committed on UK roads.

UK dangerous and careless driving statistics from the last 18 months reveal that millennials cause over half of all bad driving offences on UK roads. In total drivers 34 and under caused 58.14% of dangerous or careless driving offences in the last 18 months.

This along with other findings were the result of a freedom of information request acquired by Car Keys; which came directly from the DVLA.

Dangerous driving offences stay on drivers records for 4 years from the date of the conviction, these are outlined below:

Careless driving offence codes CD10 to CD30 must stay on a driving record for 4 years from the date of the offence. These are more commonly committed and are outlined below:

Codes CD40 to CD70 must stay on a driving record for 11 years from the date of the conviction.

Codes CD80 and CD90 must stay on a driving record for 4 years from the date of the conviction.

So which age group committed the most offences?

Surprisingly 25-34 year olds committed the most ‘bad’ driving offences (8,815.) Despite this, 17-24 year olds statistically are the worst drivers because they had the highest offence rate (0.31 per cent.) In total, drivers 34 and under were responsible for 17,286 careless and dangerous driving offences combined.

These findings certainly seem to be in line with previous studies which have been carried out. The trend also appears likely to continue, with there being more drivers 34 and under on the road, and committing the most offences.

65-74 year olds are statistically less likely to commit dangerous or careless driving offences, making them the safest drivers.

Drivers 75 and above have committed the least ‘bad’ driving offences of all the age groups, however a significant portion of licence holders in this age group may not have driven in the past 18 months.
