Mitsubishi’s new SUV brings back Eclipse name

Mitsubishi has revealed more details and pictures of its upcoming all-new SUV, which will make its first public appearance during next month’s Geneva Motor Show.

It is now confirmed that the car is called the Eclipse Cross, and it will sit between the ASX and Outlander in the Japanese brand’s SUV range.

Mitsubishi has used the word Eclipse as a name before, but not previously for an SUV. Between 1989 and 2011, Mitsubishi manufactured the Eclipse sports car, which was sold predominantly in North America.

The new Eclipse Cross has some styling cues which are similar to the latest Mitsubishi Outlander, but the car has a more coupe-like profile than either that or the more compact ASX.

It’s believed that the new Eclipse Cross SUV will take some inspiration from the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV concept, which was previously shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The XR-PHEV came with a plug-in hybrid powertrain but it’s believed that the Eclipse Cross will only use conventional petrol and diesel engines for cost reasons.

A new turbocharged petrol unit and the same diesel found in the latest ASX range are likely to feature with the Eclipse Cross, along with a mixture of front-wheel and four-wheel drive powertrains.

Expect more details on the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross to be revealed during the car’s appearance in Geneva next month.
