Monstrous BMW X5 and X7 revealed with 523bhp

The M50i models both feature the same 4.4-litre V8 that appears in the BMW M5.

BMW has unleashed the most powerful variants of its large X5 and X7 SUVs, with both becoming the range-topping models in their respective line-ups.

The two cars - badged M50i - feature a 4.4-litre V8, which is used across BMW’s ‘M’ products – including in the M5 and M6. The upgraded engine produces 523bhp, and is able to accelerate the X5 from 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds, and the X7 in 4.5 seconds, which is impressive considering the size of these SUVs. Launch control is also fitted for extra traction off the line.

A standard M sport exhaust system also provides the vocals to accompany the engine, while ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’ driving modes aim to provide more in the way of thrills and performance.

An eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox can send power to the wheels where it’s needed most via an intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

A bespoke adaptive ‘M’ suspension setup also features, which comes with electronically-controlled dampers along with adaptive air suspension. Four-wheeled steering is available on the options list, which can steer the rear wheels to aid manoeuvrability in tighter spaces.

The X5 and X7 both receive styling changes with the M50i treatment, as both models feature 21-inch alloy wheels, larger air inlets, revised side sills and grey design elements.

The cabin features an M sports steering wheel, a full leather interior with contrasting stitching and trim elements either in aluminium or wood. And to ensure you don’t forget the model you’re driving, BMW also fits illuminated door sills showing the ‘M50i’ logo. The X7 also comes with a premium Harmon Kardon sound system, too.

Prices and full specifications are yet to be announced, although BMW has said the two new performance SUVs will be available in the autumn.
