Most reliable student cars uncovered

A research report has named the Peugeot 107 as the most reliable choice of ‘student car’ for people travelling to university.

This along with other rather surprising discoveries were made by Warranty Direct, which investigated the reliability history of small cars made in the past 15 or so years – the sort of cars students are most likely to buy.

The firm based their findings on a Reliability Index Score (RIS), which took into account frequency of problems and average costs to fix them. The better a car performed in these two areas, the lower the score.

The small car which recorded the best score was the Peugeot 107, the predecessor to the 108 and made between 2005 and 2014. The French city car had a Reliability Index Score of just four. The 107, alongside its sibling Citroen C1, were the only two models covered for this report were none of the examples investigated had recorded an engine failure.

Taking second place in the report is the previous-generation Honda Jazz made between 2008 and this year. With a RIS of five, the Jazz was only just defeated by the Peugeot 107. A new-generation Honda Jazz was recently launched to the UK market and is priced from £13,495.

Completing the top five in the most reliable student car countdown is the Nissan Micra from 2002-2010 (with an RIS of six), the Peugeot 1007 (eight) and the previous-generation Mazda 2 (ten). The previous generation Fiat Panda, with an RIS of 12, sits just outside the top five.
