Nearly half of drivers ignore 20mph speed limits, survey finds

A recent survey has found that four in ten drivers admit they’ve on more than one occasion broken the speed limit in 20mph zones by at least 10mph.

Most 20mph zones in Britain are areas in the vicinity of schools and homes where many children will be regularly walking and cycling.

With kids across the nation returning to school for the start of new term, the road safety charity Brake and insurance company Direct Line have conducted a survey to find out how drivers behave in these 20mph zones. They are keen to raise awareness of these low speed areas, where children will be a lot more present now that their summer holidays are over.

'The difference between life and death'

Of all the UK drivers quizzed in the survey, 40 per cent admitted that they sometimes travel at 30mph or more where there is a 20mph speed limit established. Just over a quarter (26 per cent) of drivers surveyed say they do this at least once a month and just over one in five (21 per cent) say they speed in 20mph zones on a weekly basis.

A campaigns advisor for Brake, Alice Bailey, said: “All parents want to know their children are safe while travelling to and from school and playing outdoors. Speed limits are in place to keep all road users safe and if tragedy strikes and a child is hit by a car, the speed it is travelling at could be the difference between life and death.”
