New 2023 Mini Traveller: What to expect

New 2023 Mini Traveller: What to expect

Here’s what we could expect from this new model

A few years ago, Mini rapidly expanded its line-up with a whole host of models – including the Convertible, Clubman estate and Countryman crossover, which have all proven to be a huge success. And it looks like a further new model line could be introduced to the British brand’s range – the Traveller. Reviving yet another classic Mini name, this model could go on sale as soon as 2023.

While Mini hasn’t unveiled any details about the model yet, there has been much speculation around it. Here’s what you need to know about it.

Set to be a small MPV

Mini Countryman

While small MPVs have dwindled in popularity as many have switched to crossovers, BMW’s own 2 Series Active Tourer has been a success. Mini could build on that and launch its new Traveller in that segment, according to Autocar, which has uncovered these details.

It would aim to offer additional practicality than the current Clubman and Countryman, though it wouldn’t be much larger in terms of size.

Set to be available with electrified platforms

Mini Electric

While Mini could launch the Travelller as purely an electric model, it’s more likely that it will be available with a range of different powertrains – including electrified ones.

It’s likely to sit on BMW’s FAAR platform, which supports front- and four-wheel-drive, as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain (likely shared with an eventual plug-in hybrid version of the 1 Series) and also an all-electric model version later in its lifetime. Traditional combustion engines are likely to be offered, too.

Revives a nameplate not seen since 1969

(Original Mini Traveller)

Mini relishes on its history – hence why you’ll see names such as Clubman and Countryman on new models that also featured on its classic cars.

The Traveller was the same, as between 1960 and 1969 it was produced by Morris as a more versatile version of the compact Mini. It’s also affectionately known as “Woodie’ for its use of ash wood trim on the rear body.

We’re hoping the all-new Traveller will be just as interesting as the original.
