New and more powerful SEAT Leon Cupra 290 unveiled

SEAT has managed to wring even more power out of its flagship performance car, the Leon Cupra, by boosting its output to 286bhp.

Following on from the reveal of the facelifted Ibiza Cupra last week, the newly-named Leon Cupra 290 now significantly beats the Ford Focus ST and comes close to the Volkswagen Golf R in terms of raw power.

Standing as the pinnacle of SEAT’s performance offerings, the Cupra 290 is able to shift from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds, before heading on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

Maximum torque from its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine clocks in at a meaty 350Nm across a broader rev range than before, while it returns up to 42.8mpg with as little as 149g/km of CO2 emissions.

Buyers can also specify the optional Sub8 Performance Pack, which adds on a set of Brembo brake callipers, an exclusive wheel design and racing tyres to maximise performance.

SEAT has also given the new Cupra 290 a slight aesthetic update, with new tailgate lettering, a retuned exhaust to refine the engine sound and chrome trim elements in the interior.

Standard equipment for the Leon Cupra 290 includes 19-inch wheels, updated steering and a front-axle differential lock, plus the Cupra Drive Profile with selectable driving modes.

Full LED headlamps and taillights are also included, along with sports seats upholstered in Alcantara, a 6.5-inch touchscreen with integrated sat-nav and interior ambient lighting.

Pricing has yet to be revealed for the new SEAT Leon Cupra 290, but given that the current Cupra 280 is priced from £28,785, it’s expected to start from slightly more.
