BMW has unveiled its new 4 Series Gran Coupe, offering a bolder and sleeker look than its predecessor and a raft of new technology.
Joining the regular Coupe and Convertible models in the 4 Series range, the Gran Coupe offers more in the way of practicality, thanks to the addition of rear doors and a stretched layout. It also follows on from the recently unveiled electric i4.
It adopts the same bold design as its siblings, headed up by a large new kidney grille and sleek flowing lines. Slim adaptive LED headlights are also included as standard, and can be upgraded to the firm’s ‘Laser Light’ technology as an option.
The new Gran Coupe grows in size, being more than 14cm longer than its predecessor, along with 3cm wider and 5cm taller.
Unlike the four-seat Coupe and Convertible, the Gran Coupe is a full five-seater, with BMW promising ‘generous amounts of space in the rear’ and more in the way of headroom and legroom. The boot has also grown by 39 litres to offer 470 litres in total.
A wide choice of engines are available, though the 420d with its 187bhp 2.0-litre powerplant is the only diesel available for the time being. As for petrol, there is the choice of the 420i, 430i and flagship M440i. The former two use a 2.0-litre unit, with outputs of 181bhp and 242bhp respectively, while the M440i features a powerful 369bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that allows the Gran Coupe to reach 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds.
The M440i is also distinguished by a larger rear spoiler, Cerium Grey detailing and more angular front. With an M4 Gran Coupe unlikely to be offered, this will serve as the most powerful option here.
BMW is promising a sporty drive thanks to its specially tuned chassis and perfect 50:50 weight distribution, while an optional adaptive sports suspension setup is available for those wanting to switch between various damper settings.
The new 4 Series Gran Coupe benefits from BMW’s latest technology, too, including a new touchscreen system that can be operated using the words ‘Hey BMW’, while an optional ‘Digital Key’ service lets you unlock the car using your iPhone. New safety systems available include self-parking functions that can navigate both into and out of spaces and a more advanced adaptive cruise control system.
The new 4 Series Gran Coupe will only be available in M Sport, M Sport Pro Edition and M440i trims, with prices starting from £40,695 for the 420i M Sport and rising to £54,670 for the top M440i version. Order books are now open, with first deliveries expected in November 2021.
