New BMW 5 Series ‘Remote 3D View’ feature teased

BMW teases new smartphone feature for its new 5 Series, allowing users to monitor their vehicle at a distance.

A recent announcement by BMW has lifted the curtain on a new and upcoming feature for the latest-generation of the luxury saloon.

BMW revealed the image above in a press release followed simply by two sentences, which refers to the smartphone-based feature as “Remote 3D View”.

The press release states: “Always know what is happening around your vehicle. The next generation of the BMW 5 Series with the BMW Connected feature ‘Remote 3D View’. Coming soon.”

Check your car in real time

From what we can gather, the new smartphone feature will allow 5 Series owners to keep an eye on their vehicle when they are away from it, giving them a 3D, bird’s eye view render of the car and its surrounding area. This could potentially give owners the ability to check on the security of their car in real-time.

Smartphone and vehicle integration for security purposes is not uncommon nowadays. Vauxhall has an OnStar app which allows users to lock their cars and even turn on their headlights remotely via their mobile phone.

BMW has yet to specify exactly how its new app is going to work, but it looks like it could be an amalgamation of an OnStar-esque app and Nissan’s Around-View Monitor system.
