New electric Fiat 500 to cost less than £20,000

The quirky EV will be one of the most affordable electric cars on sale now

Fiat has announced the full range for its new electric 500 city car, with models available from less than £20,000.

The Italian manufacturer’s first EV to be sold in Europe was unveiled earlier this year, with the model boasting a 199-mile range, but Fiat has now announced a smaller battery option to bring the price down.

You’ll be able to choose it as either a hatchback or convertible, with the entry-level ‘Action’ model coming with a 23.8kWh battery and 92bhp electric motor, which enables a claimed 115 miles of range, or up to 150 miles in city driving. It’s also equipped with 50kWh rapid charging, too.

Prices for this start from just £19,995, which makes it great value for money and one of the most affordable new EVs around. Standard kit is generous, though, and includes keyless start, rear parking sensors and a seven-inch digital dial system.

Mid-sec Passion models (costing from £23,495) come with a larger 42kWh battery pack and more powerful 116bhp motor, which enables the more impressive 199-mile range. These also add a new seven-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED daytime running lights and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Next up is the Icon, which features a larger 10.25-inch media system, 16-inch alloy wheels and a dashboard colour-matched to the exterior of the car. These are priced from £24,995. A special edition ‘La Prima’ launch edition sits at the top of the range, and costs from £26,995.

Fiat has also announced a new ‘3+1’ version to sit alongside hatchback and cabriolet versions, which comes with a small rear passenger door to aid access to the back seats.

The new Fiat 500 electric is based on new underpinnings, and will be sold alongside the standard petrol city car. Order books will open in December, with the first customer deliveries expected in March.
