New Ferrari GTC4 Lusso, an FF by any other name

Ferrari has officially unveiled a new facelifted version of its FF high-performance shooting brake, which gets a new name along with a range of other revisions.

Now called the GTC4 Lusso and billed as “a major evolution” of the sporting GT car concept, the car now comes with four-wheel drive for the first time, along with all-wheel steering.

The same system that features on cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 and 918 Spyder, all-wheel steering adjusts the rear wheels in varying directions depending on the speed of the car.

Four-wheel drive and all-wheel steering

At low speeds, the rear wheels are turned in the opposite direction to the front wheels to effectively increase turning ability, while at high speeds the rear wheels go in the same direction to up stability.

Ferrari’s slightly confusing naming system means that the ‘4’ doesn’t refer to four-wheel drive, but rather the number of seats in the car. Previously, the company also used the number to denote any model with a quad-cam V12 engine.

The new Ferrari GTC4 Lusso has also been slightly redesigned on the surface, with a new appearance inspired by some of Maranello’s more recent models like the 488 GTB.

651bhp V12 engine

It features new headlights, plus four round tail-lights at the rear as a nice tip of the hat to several older Ferraris, along with flared wheel arches, a new front grille plus a subtle rear spoiler.

Inside, it also comes with a new sporty steering wheel, plus four wraparound seats and Ferrari’s latest infotainment system on a 10.25-inch high-definition touchscreen, plus a new control layout.

Below the bonnet, the outgoing FF’s naturally-aspirated 6.3-litre V12 has had its output boosted from 651bhp to 680bhp, with peak power kicking in at a heady 8,000 rpm.

Working in tandem with the GTC4 Lusso’s new aerodynamic design, it’s capable of reaching 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than the FF - with a top speed of 208mph.

Alongside the four-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering, it also features Ferrari’s patented Slip Side Control, which incorporates an electronic differential and sophisticated dampers for razor-sharp performance.

Prices for the new Ferrari GTC4 Lusso have yet to be announced, but it’s expected that more will be known upon the car’s official unveiling at this year’s Geneva Motor Show next month.
