Ford has provided insight into the popularity of the new Ford Mustang in Europe, with nearly half a million people using the car’s official configurator in the first month available.
The Mustang, which was first introduced in 1964, is one of the most iconic sports car names in the world. The new sixth-generation model is the first Ford Mustang to be officially sold in Britain and other European countries in the 50-plus years of the car’s existence. Pricing for the Ford Mustang starts at £28,995 for the coupe and £32,995 for the convertible.
An early signal of the Mustang’s immense global popularity was given back in May 2014, when Ford made the Mustang’s first 500 units for Europe available to reserve during that year’s UEFA Champions League Final. These first batch of cars were all registered just 30 seconds after they became available.
Last January, Ford launched an online configurator on its website, which allows more potential Mustang buyers in Europe to tweak specifications and other details to create their own car and review the prices.
Ford has now revealed the extent of interest in the Mustang and its European configurator, with nearly half a million models being configured online in the first month following its release. Between mid-January and mid-February, the configurator received over 1.1 million online visits.
Some of the most popular choices made by those that tried the configurator have also been revealed. In Britain alone, the most common colour chosen for the new Mustang was Race Red, picked by 22 per cent of users. The standard six-speed manual transmission was also more popular than the six-speed automatic ‘box which adds £1,500 to the Mustang’s price.
Of the two petrol engines available for the new Mustang, the 412bhp 5.0-litre V8 was more popular than the cheaper 310bhp 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit. The V8 was picked by 54 per cent of British configurator users. The V8 version of the new Mustang starts from £32,995.
The Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service at Ford of Europe, Roelant de Waard, commented: “The rush to configure Mustang online represents 50 years of pent up demand across Europe. For some people, the new Mustang is the car they have waited for their whole lives.”
The new Ford Mustang is available to order now in right-hand drive in Britain, with deliveries estimated for this autumn.
