New Ford Mustang hits 62mph in under five seconds

Ford has revealed performance figures for the European-spec all-new Mustang sports car. It will be the fastest accelerating Ford coupe ever offered in this region, capable of covering the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in under five seconds.

The new Ford Mustang is already available to order in Britain, and over 1,200 orders have been placed in this country alone. Over 2,200 orders have been recorded across the whole of Europe.

Available in two-door coupe or convertible bodystyles, this latest-generation of the iconic muscle car is offered with two petrol engines from launch - a 313bhp 2.3-litre EcoBoost and a 415bhp 5.0-litre V8.

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost is slower but more efficient, offering a 0-62mph sprint time of 5.8 seconds. When using the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the EcoBoost-run Mustang coupe also records 35.3mpg combined and a CO2 output of 179g/km. These figures are altered to 34.4mpg and 184g/km for the convertible version.

Customers can choose a six-speed automatic gearbox with the EcoBoost-run Mustang. However, this reduces the fuel economy to between 28.8mpg and CO2 emissions jump to 225g/km, regardless of bodystyle.

When using the 5.0-litre V8 engine and manual gearbox, the Mustang’s 0-62mph sprint time is just 4.8 seconds. It also returns 20.9mpg and 299g/km for the coupe or 20.8mpg and 306g/km for the convertible.

Unlike when using the 2.3-litre EcoBoost, the Mustang GT V8 is more efficient when switching to the optional six-speed automatic gearbox. With this, the American sports car records 23.5mpg and 281g/km for the coupe and 22.1mpg and 289g/km for the convertible.

Deliveries of the new Ford Mustang to British customers are set to begin in autumn 2015.
