New Hyundai Tucson to come with diesel mild-hybrid

The large SUV is the first model in the brand’s line-up to come with one, with the system paired to a six-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive.

Hyundai has announced that the new-generation Tucson will be available with a diesel mild hybrid powertrain, built to improve fuel efficiency over standard diesel setups.

The large SUV will employ a 2.0-litre diesel engine that is paired to a 48V electric motor, which Hyundai said will reduce fuel usage by seven per cent.

Altogether, the system produces 183bhp and is paired to a six-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic option is also available with the mild hybrid setup.

The South Korean brand also confirmed that a 1.6-litre diesel will be teamed up with the electrical system in the near-future.

Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai Motor Europe vice president for marketing and product, said: “With our new mild hybrid powertrain system for our best-selling model, we are further expanding the company’s electrification strategy to make clean technologies accessible for even more customers.
