New Jaguar Land Rover tech helps you avoid red lights

The new tests by JLR will look to reduce traffic stopping at lights and adapt the speed of the vehicle to hit as many green lights as possible.

It can get very annoying when you keep getting stuck at red lights while going through heavy traffic – so Jaguar Land Rover has started developing technology to help drivers get through stoppages quicker.

The Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) technology is a vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) feature that will help drivers avoid red lights by telling you what speed to drive at between junctions.

The GLOSA system sends signals to traffic lights further up the road so the driver can then be given an advisory speed to get through them before they change to red. A specially-modified Jaguar F-Pace is being used to test the system in the West Midlands.

With this and other V2X systems, it is hoped that traffic in the future will run smoother and allow for cleaner cities, as cars will be braking less and emitting less harmful pollutants.

The trials of the GLOSA system are part of the government-funded UK Autodrive project, which is helping advance Jaguar Land Rover’s autonomous and connected vehicle technologies.

Oriol Quintana-Morales, Jaguar Land Rover connected technology research engineer, said: “This cutting-edge technology will radically reduce the time we waste at traffic lights. It has the potential to revolutionise driving by creating safe, free-flowing cities that take the stress out of commuting.

“Our research is motivated by the chance to make future journeys as comfortable and stress-free as possible for all our customers.”

Other technologies are also being tested during these trials, including emergency vehicle warning, collaborative parking and intersection collision warning.
