New McLaren supercar slides into view, will also feature Drift Mode

McLaren has unveiled the first official look at its upcoming new 650S replacement, all dolled up in camouflage paintwork and getting all sideways on a test track.

Continuing its drip-feed of information on the new supercar, rumoured to be called the 720S, McLaren has unveiled that the new car will feature something called ‘Variable Drift Control’.

Yep, even supercars will come with drift modes now, continuing the trend for easily-accessible oversteer pioneered by the Ford Focus RS and continued by cars like the recently-unveiled Merc E 63 AMG.

McLaren says that its purpose is to provide “greater involvement for a driver who wants to fully explore the dynamic ability of the second-generation Super Series”.

Variable Drift Control feature

Unique about this system, however, is that instead of being selected via a button, drivers will be able to swipe their finger across the car’s infotainment screen to manually adjust how much the stability control intervenes.

The new car will also come with a Proactive Chassis Control function, essentially a drive mode selector which enables drivers to choose from Comfort, Sport or Track modes.

Able to read and analyse inputs from the road in milliseconds, the Proactive Chassis Control feature can instantly adjust the car to make it more comfortable, more dynamic or somewhere in between.

So far the new McLaren supercar is shaping up to be a serious machine, but you’ll have to wait until the Geneva Motor Show, which opens next month, to get the inside scoop on the finished product.
