New Peugeot 3008: bigger, bolder and now a plug-in

Peugeot has unveiled the latest version of its 3008 crossover, which now benefits from a new look, new equipment and frugal new engines.

Prices and full specifications have yet to be announced, but Peugeot says the car will be available to order in the UK from November, with first deliveries due January 2017.

Larger than the Nissan Qashqai, the new 3008 aims to be more of a dedicated SUV than its crossover-esque predecessor, and will include a host of new features including a plug-in powertrain.

Bigger and more spacious

It certainly looks more SUV like, with a bolder front end and more ground clearance for a more assertive, off-roady appearance and a choice of alloy wheels between 17 and 19-inches in size.

Clocking in at nearly four and a half metres long, the new 3008 is one of the more compact models in its segment, but Peugeot says it offers more passenger and luggage space than its predecessor.

It’s got almost 90 litres more cargo capacity than the last 3008 for a maximum space of 1,580 litres, but it’s also much lighter thanks to a new aluminium-intensive construction.

Inside, the cabin features the latest version of Peugeot’s i-Cockpit digital interior architecture, which includes digital instrument dials and an infotainment screen that supports smartphone connectivity.

The 3008 will also benefit from a TomTom sat-nav, massaging seats and interior ambient lighting, along with a 10-speaker FOCAL sound system, the first such system fitted to a production car.

It also features some rather unique quirks, which include a fragrance diffuser with various selectable scents, plus the option of a folding electric scooter or bike hidden beneath the boot.

Euro 6-compliant engines

Designed for drivers who want additional mobility solutions to and from their cars and to make traversing urban areas more effective, the electric scooters are recharged when the car is running.

From launch, the car will come with a range of different powertrain options, include a 128bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine with a choice of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

A larger and more powerful 1.6-litre petrol engine is also available, with a maximum output of 163bhp and the auto as standard, plus three different diesel engines.

The entry diesel is a 99bhp 1.6-litre version, while there’s also the option of a more powerful 118bhp version and finally a 2.0-litre diesel available with outputs of either 148bhp or 178bhp.

Peugeot says that the 3008 is capable of reducing emissions to just 100g/km depending on engine choice, and a plug-in hybrid that has a pure electric range of 30 miles will be available from 2019.
