New Porsche 911 GT2 RS officially unveiled as Forza Motorsport 7’s cover car

We’ve known for some time now that a new version of the legendary 911 GT2 RS was on its way, but the car has gotten a surprise unveiling at this year’s E3 gaming conference.

The most powerful car ever to wear the 911 badge, the new GT2 RS is estimated to make up to 700bhp from the same twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre flat-six engine that powers the current 911 Turbo S.

Earlier this year, the team behind the Forza racing games announced a six-year partnership with Porsche, and the GT2 will star as the cover car of the upcoming Forza 7 game, which is due out in October.

So far, exact specifications and details on the car have yet to be released, though it’s known that the car’s extra power comes from stronger engine internals and larger turbochargers with more boost.

Similar in effect to the BMW M4 GTS, the new GT2 RS will also feature a water injection system, which sprays a fine mist of water into the engine cylinders to reduce temperature and increase power.

The car will also sport a low, wide and aggressive appearance with the addition of various carbon fibre aero parts, a huge rear wing to generate downforce and twin NACA ducts on the bonnet.

Weighing in at less than 1,500kg it’s estimated that the GT2 RS will be able to hit 0-62mph in under three seconds, with a top speed that could be in excess of 211mph.

Like the previous GT2 RS, which deservedly earned the nickname ‘widowmaker’ for its unforgiving rear-wheel drive handling, the new version will transfer its power to the rear wheels only.

However, while the last version came with a manual gearbox it’s understood that the new GT2 will be PDK automatic only, as a manual wouldn’t be able to withstand the sheer torque from the engine.
