New Toyota Supra engine and transmission details leaked online

The upcoming new Toyota Supra will use BMW-sourced engines and an automatic gearbox, according to internal BMW documentation leaked online.

Engine and transmission details regarding the much-anticipated upcoming Toyota Supra have been shared online following the leak of documentation belonging to BMW, which is helping Toyota develop the new Supra.

The new Supra sports car is being developed as part of a technical agreement between Toyota and BMW, which will also see a new-generation BMW Z4 sports car launch.

According to numerous online reports, the leaked internal BMW documentation reveals that the new Supra will share the same front-engined, rear-wheel drive platform to be used in BMW’s upcoming new sports car.

Furthermore, the documentation indicates the Supra will also share BMW engines including two 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder units as well as a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six. In its most powerful guise, the Supra could produce somewhere between 330 and 350bhp when it eventually goes on sale.

Intriguingly, the leaked documentation also suggests that while the new BMW Z4 will use a manual gearbox, the Toyota Supra will go in a different direction and only utilise a BMW-sourced automatic gearbox regardless of engine choice.

In the past, an all-wheel drive hybrid version of the upcoming Supra has been rumoured, but no mention of such a powertrain is given in the leaked documentation. However, that doesn’t rule out the possibility that such a version could join the Supra range in the future.

While the new Toyota Supra public debut is still some distance away, BMW is expected to reveal its new Z4 in concept form later this week at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Monterey Car Week in California.
