New Toyota Supra to launch soon, currently testing at Nürburgring

Toyota is due to soon launch its new version of the Supra, with its flagship sports coupe currently undergoing testing at the Nürburgring.

Speaking at the launch of the facelifted GT86 at the Fuji Speedway in Japan, Toyota’s chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said that the manufacturer is working hard on putting the final touches on the new car.

Although the car hasn’t officially been confirmed to use the Supra name, Toyota filed a trademark for it earlier this year and Tada confirmed that the company is close to finalising it.

"It's fantastic, it's going very well"

Co-developed with BMW in a collaboration that Tada described as a “good synergy”, the new Supra will share a platform with BMW’s next-gen roadster, expected to be called the Z5.

When asked what the new car was like and when it would be unveiled, he said: “It will be in the near future. Prototypes are already completed. I can say it’s fantastic, it is going very well”.

Toyota also confirmed that the new Supra will aim to address consumer criticism of the GT86, which has been castigated by some as being too lacking in power.

400bhp twin-turbo V6

Tada claims that the Supra will put an increased focus on performance to a far greater extent than its smaller coupe sibling, and final testing is underway at the Nürburgring and at Fuji.

Due to be built in Austria, the new Supra is expected to be powered by an all-new twin-turbo V6 engine built by Toyota, with an estimated output of 400bhp or more.
