New Volvo S90 Ambience Concept connects to your senses

The S90 Ambience concept is being displayed at the Beijing Auto Show this week and includes visual, sound and scent cues to help people relax.

Volvo has revealed a new concept that aims to help improve the comfort of passengers on journeys through sensory cues.

Called the S90 Ambience concept, it is based on the three-seat S90 Excellence model that only has the driver’s seat up front, and allows the rear passenger to choose from seven different atmospheric options to help them relax.

With five relaxing modes – Northern Lights, Scandinavian Forest, Swan Lake, Archipelago and Rain – and a mode each for resting and uplifting moods, the car employs visual stimuli on the ceiling, scent being emitted from the central console and headrest-mounted speakers to create different environments.

Robin Page, senior vice president of design at Volvo Cars, said: “The Ambience Concept redefines luxury by taking it beyond material choices, creating a car that connects with your senses.

“The design explores how people feel inside the car and enables them to influence their own mood and well-being.”

Page added: “We’re known for our human-centric approach to design and as an industry leader in advanced safety technology. Ambience reinforces this and shows our broader focus on human care, which starts with safety and also extends to general well-being.”

Volvo says that even though this is just a concept at the moment, it would like to bring the car onto the market – primarily for its Chinese customers.
