Nissan and Italdesign join forces for GT-R prototype

To celebrate the 50th anniversaries of Italdesign and the GT-R moniker, the companies teamed up to create a unique model

In their first collaboration, Nissan and Italdesign have created the GT-R50 prototype – which celebrates the 50thanniversaries of both the Italian design house and the GT-R name.

Based on the 2018 Nissan GT-R Nismo, the model was developed, engineered and built by Italdesign, while the design was down to Nissan’s design studios in London and America.

Despite having the same base shape as the standard GT-R, the GT-R50 comes with gold detailing on the front end, wing mirrors and on the back, as well as a much smoother design overall.

Sharp accents have been added to the bonnet, the LED headlights and wheel arches, with custom wheels also being used. Grey and gold bodywork gives the GT-R50 a unique look that helps this prototype stand out from the crowd.

The interior comes with two carbon fibre finishes on the console panels, with black Alcantara and leather used on the seats. The gold accenting continues from the outside, with the instrument panel, doors and switchgear getting a splash of metallic colour.

To maintain the sportiness of the design and GT-Rs before it, the GT-R50 comes with the Nismo 3.8-litre V6 engine that produces 710bhp and 780Nm of torque.

Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan senior vice president for global design, said: “How often do you get to ask, ‘What if we created a GT-R without limits,’ and then actually get to build it?

“This is a rare window in time when two big moments intersect: 50 years of Italdesign shaping the automotive world and 50 years of Nissan generating excitement through our iconic GT-R. So to celebrate this convergence, Nissan and Italdesign created this custom GT-R to mark 50 years of engineering leadership.”

The GT-R50 will make its European debut next month.
