Nissan X-Trail gets new, cheaper turbo engine

Nissan is bolstering its X-Trail SUV range with a new entry-level turbo petrol engine and a reduced starting price. Available to order now and with first deliveries starting this August, the new entry level X-Trail reduces the car’s starting price from £23,455 to £21,995.

The new entry-level engine is a 1.6-litre four-cylinder DIG-T unit which produces 161bhp and 240Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. It can take the X-Trail through the 0-62mph sprint in 9.7 seconds and offers a top speed of 124mph.

This engine utilises front-wheel drive only and a six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard. Start-stop engine technology, which can save fuel and cut emissions while in slow-moving traffic, is also a standard feature.

Although it’s considered the entry-level engine, the new turbo unit is more powerful and offers quicker performance than the one previously established engine in the X-Trail range - the 129bhp 1.6-litre dCi diesel.

As well as being available for the standard trim, Visia, the new engine can be picked for all other trims in the X-Trail line-up. Fuel economy and the CO2 output for the turbo engine is affected by trim choice.

For the Visia and Acenta trim it officially averages 45.6mpg and emits 145g/km in CO2. For the higher-level n-tec and Tekna trims, these figures are altered to 44.1mpg and 149g/km. These different CO2 outputs have no effect on how much Vehicle Excise Duty customers pay.
