In a design challenge to show what the future of SUVs could look like, Nissan has revealed the XMotion concept – which, according to the Japanese brand, combines Japanese culture and design with American convenience.

Said as ‘cross-motion’, the concept has bold styling all around and the wheels are placed on each corner with little to no body hang for a dynamic design.

The metal 21-inch wheels include a bold look and the tyres are laminated on rather than fitted for the ultimate connection between wheel and tarmac. Other exterior features include a retractable roof box and an intricate rear light design.

Inside, the XMotion comes with an innovative 4+2 seat layout, with three rows of two seats to provide a better use of the cabin space.

The interior design is also very innovative, with Nissan applying the Japanese ‘kigumi’ design ethos that is inspired by structures in nature.

Nissan also applied innovative technology concepts, such as seven screens that are used across the dashboard and on the roof called the ‘digital room mirror’ that can be controlled by gestures, eye movements and voice controls.

Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president of global design at Nissan, said: “In the Xmotion concept, we explored the more rugged and powerful side of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.

“Bold and powerful forms and proportions are, upon closer inspection, contrasted with aspects of traditional Japanese craftsmanship expressed in a contemporary way.”

Albaisa added: “We envision the Xmotion concept to be a highly functional SUV that can be driven every day, yet can take the owners and friends to a national park or recreation area on a whim. With its combination of style and technology, this concept fulfils Nissan’s mission of moving people to a better world.”
