One in four UK drivers admit they are 'dangerous' when driving abroad

A recent survey has found that over half of UK motorists consider themselves nervous while driving abroad, and as many as one-in-four say their nerves make them dangerous as a result. It has also been found that one-in-three UK drivers have been involved in a road incident while on holiday, including traffic accidents and being booked by the police.

These findings come from Continental Tyres who quizzed 2,000 British motorists. While many admitted to being nervous about driving abroad, seven-in-ten of the respondents said they don’t research foreign traffic laws before driving in a different country. Almost half of the respondents (48 per cent) also admitted they never check the brakes or tyres on their car before using it abroad.

A safety expert for Continental Tyres, Mark Griffiths, commented: “This research shows that motorists can be more at risk when driving on holiday in the UK or overseas.

More at risk when driving on holiday

“It is essential for those who drive on holiday wherever they are to make sure they do simple checks and consider what the rules of the road are for their holiday location.”

Griffiths added: “It is also important that people drive when calm and alert so that their attention is on the road and their driving ability is not compromised. If they need to take a break to be settled, then finding a safe place to do that makes sense.”
