Order books open for facelifted Mercedes-Benz SL

The facelifted Mercedes-Benz SL convertible is available to order now, with prices starting from £73,805.

First unveiled last November, the updated SL-Class model features a redesigned exterior, with new bumpers, a tweaked bonnet and a new grille that’s got shades of the Mercedes AMG GT.

Round the back, the SL now gets a set of new one-piece tail lights, while AMG models get fins in the bumper and there’s now the addition of new paint colours and a range of new alloy wheel options.

Buyers can choose between four models in the range, which starts with the entry-level SL 400, while there’s also the more powerful SL 500 model, which is priced from £82,850.

Topping the range are the Mercedes AMG SL 63 and SL 65 models, both of which are significantly more powerful than the first two and considerably pricier, costing £114,100 and £173,295 respectively.

The SL 400 comes powered by a 4.0-litre 362bhp petrol V6, which Mercedes says has 34 horsepower more than its predecessor and is capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds.

Powerful engines, new equipment

SL 500 models, meanwhile, get a more powerful 4.7-litre V8 engine with 449bhp, which is brawny enough to take the convertible to 62mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds.

Finally, the SL 63 gets a 5.5-litre V8 with 577bhp and is capable of 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds, while the SL 65 comes with a 6.0-litre V12 with 620bhp that can cover the benchmark sprint in a blistering four seconds flat.

Power is transferred to the wheels via Mercedes’ nine-speed 9G-TRONIC PLUS automatic gearbox for the SL 400 and SL 500, while the range-topping AMG models get new seven-speed automatics.

Standard equipment across the range includes adaptive LED headlights, Apple CarPlay and Mercedes’ COMAND Online infotainment system, plus safety features like Attention Assist.

Extra kit for the AMG line-up includes AMG brakes, a race-inspired performance steering wheel and AMG-spec exhausts and sports suspension, plus exclusive lettering on the front wings.

Optional extras for the SL range includes the Night Package, which adds larger 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, plus a rear diffuser trim strip, plus gloss black exterior mirror housings and a front splitter.

For an additional £2,830, customers can also add the Luxury Package, which includes an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system, heated and ventilated seats, plus power closing for the doors and boot.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL range is available to order now, with first deliveries due to begin from this April onwards.
